Mr. Cline m yearg oM and ,s survived by 1 I his widow and eight living children. John M. Stale/ Die* as Result Deadly Assault. Another crime that has stained the record of southern Guilford came to the knowledge of officers of the law last Wednesday afternoon, when John If. Staley, of Julian, was brought to St. Leo's hospital desper-ately wounded. He died at the hos-pital shortly after midnight Thurs-day morning, having never regained consciousness from the time he was assaulted Sunday afternoon. There are several versions of the crime-, the general opinion being that Staley was assaulted during a quar-rel over a game of cards Sunday af-ternoon. The coroner's jury has named Wade Coble as the murderer, but others are believed to be impli-cated. Mrs. Jake Coble, the mother of Wade, Will Coble and a negro named Albert Ryan are in jail, while offi-cers are today scouring the country around Julian for Jake Coble and his son Wade. Yesterday a report came to town that the two Cobles were concealing themselves in a dense body of woodland in the com-munity. Sheriff Jones immediately summoned all his deputies that could be reached, and this morning a posse left Greensboro for Julian, expecting to be met there by the deputies of southern Guilford. A preliminary hearing had been set before Squire Collins for this af-ternoon, but it is understood that it will be postponed until other arrests are made. of Strong Effort Being Made to Have Jail Sentence Commuted. Baxter Shemwell, formerly of Lex-ington, who is supposed to begin a jail sentence of five months in Greensboro on April 1 for an assault upon a Southern Railway conductor with a pistol 18 months ago, is mak- . ing an effort to have his sentence commoted to a fine. The notice of the application is signed by Dermott Shemwell, a son of the defendant, who has called on Governor Kitchin several times recently in behalf of his father and who passed through Greensboro Monday night en route to Raleigh on the same mission. The application for a commutation of the sentence is based on the al-legation that the physical condition of Shemwell is such that his life would be endangered by confinement in jail. It was upon similar repre-sentations that Governor Kitchin granted a reprieve in the case a few months ago. Several days ago two of the lead-ing physicians of Greensboro, at the request of Governor Kitchin, made an examination of Shemwell in this city. The report of their examination has been forwarded to the governor, and while the physicians refuse to say anything for publication, it is understood they found Shem-well to be suffering from a weak heart, a high pulse and a low tem-perature. While the defendant was found to be in a rather poor physical condition, it is understood that the report of the physicians does not say that his health would be further SAVING IMONEY! > : Perhaps the true story of the , imperlled Dy confinement in jail, crime will come out at the Prellmi- The governor wI11 take 80me action nary hearing While Mrs. Coble who _ maUer wlth,n ^ neJt few is held mainly as a witness, names and should he decline tQ com. her son Wade as the guilty party, |taute .. sentence t0 a fine Shem. she says the act was committed in ,well wiu be exl)ected to begin serving self defense. hls sentence of five months in Guil- It seems that the trouble occurred f/afVm JaU on Frtday ot next week. in the woods, where Staley and sev-eral others spent the afternoon of Sunday, March 13, playing cards- It Dr. C. John M. Stale/ Die* as Result
Deadly Assault.
Another crime that has stained the
record of southern Guilford came to
the knowledge of officers of the law
last Wednesday afternoon, when
John If. Staley, of Julian, was
brought to St. Leo's hospital desper-ately
wounded. He died at the hos-pital
shortly after midnight Thurs-day
morning, having never regained
consciousness from the time he was
assaulted Sunday afternoon.
There are several versions of the
crime-, the general opinion being that
Staley was assaulted during a quar-rel
over a game of cards Sunday af-ternoon.
The coroner's jury has
named Wade Coble as the murderer,
but others are believed to be impli-cated.
Mrs. Jake Coble, the mother of
Wade, Will Coble and a negro named
Albert Ryan are in jail, while offi-cers
are today scouring the country
around Julian for Jake Coble and
his son Wade. Yesterday a report
came to town that the two Cobles
were concealing themselves in a
dense body of woodland in the com-munity.
Sheriff Jones immediately
summoned all his deputies that could
be reached, and this morning a posse
left Greensboro for Julian, expecting
to be met there by the deputies of
southern Guilford.
A preliminary hearing had been
set before Squire Collins for this af-ternoon,
but it is understood that it
will be postponed until other arrests
are made.
of Strong Effort Being Made to Have
Jail Sentence Commuted.
Baxter Shemwell, formerly of Lex-ington,
who is supposed to begin a
jail sentence of five months in
Greensboro on April 1 for an assault
upon a Southern Railway conductor
with a pistol 18 months ago, is mak- .
ing an effort to have his sentence
commoted to a fine. The notice of
the application is signed by Dermott
Shemwell, a son of the defendant,
who has called on Governor Kitchin
several times recently in behalf of
his father and who passed through
Greensboro Monday night en route to
Raleigh on the same mission.
The application for a commutation
of the sentence is based on the al-legation
that the physical condition
of Shemwell is such that his life
would be endangered by confinement
in jail. It was upon similar repre-sentations
that Governor Kitchin
granted a reprieve in the case a
few months ago.
Several days ago two of the lead-ing
physicians of Greensboro, at the
request of Governor Kitchin, made
an examination of Shemwell in this
city. The report of their examination
has been forwarded to the governor,
and while the physicians refuse
to say anything for publication,
it is understood they found Shem-well
to be suffering from a weak
heart, a high pulse and a low tem-perature.
While the defendant was
found to be in a rather poor physical
condition, it is understood that the
report of the physicians does not
say that his health would be further
