Au unusual course was pursued by the Messick Grocery Company, of Charlotte, last week in an effort to col-lect a bill of about $40 from J. H. West, of this city. Mr. West had charge of the refreshment car on the Norfolk ex-cursion and while in Norfolk the gro-cery company had him arrested as an absconding debtor. The debt iu ques-tion was contracted away last fall, both parties to the transaction beiug then, as now, residents of this state. It look-ed to West like a huge bluff and he promptly '"called" it by employing Judge Cabell, one of the foremost law-good yers of Norfolk, who had him released in short order. Judge Cabell made it clear to the Norfolk authorities as well as the grocery company's attorney there that they had made a serious mistake by molesting Mr. West on Virgiuia soil and since the latter re-turned home he has hinted vaguely at a big suit for damages. A Busy Week In Superior Court. Judge George H. Nearly two hundred cases, three of them for capital crimes, appeared on the clerk's books, yet it is probable that they will all be disposed of by the end of the week. The grand jury under the fore-manship of Mr. W. H. Idol got down to work early in the day, aud in good time the big grist was beiug ground. Several submissions in minor cases such as retailing, affrays aud beating trains, made a big hole in the docket the first day and up to last night more thttn one-third of the cases had been dis-posed of. The only case of more than passing interest tried yesterday was that of Harry Leach, the young hotel thief. showed up again, this time at King

Au unusual course was pursued by
the Messick Grocery Company, of
Charlotte, last week in an effort to col-lect
a bill of about $40 from J. H. West,
of this city. Mr. West had charge of
the refreshment car on the Norfolk ex-cursion

company had him arrested as an
absconding debtor. The debt iu ques-tion
was contracted away last fall, both
parties to the transaction beiug then,
as now, residents of this state. It look-ed
to West like a huge bluff and he
promptly '"called" it by employing
Judge Cabell, one of the foremost law-good
yers of Norfolk, who had him released
in short order. Judge Cabell made it
clear to the Norfolk authorities as well
as the grocery company's attorney
there that they had made a serious
mistake by molesting Mr. West on
Virgiuia soil and since the latter re-turned
home he has hinted vaguely at
a big suit for damages.
