The receipts on our market for the past week have not been as large as they were for the previous weeks, owiug to the harsh weather which we had, preventing farmers from marketing their tobacco. Prices showed a little more animation and we consider all grades of tobacco a little better than they were for the previous week—we would say from 2.5 cents to $1.00 per hundred better. There is more life and activity in the sales and our buyers seem to be more anxious for tobacco than they have been. The quality of the offerings was about the same as for previous weeks except on the first of the week, when they were poorer than they have been for some time. All grades of desirable tobacco are in active demand and we consider this a good time for farmers to put their tobacco ou the market, as the inclination of prices seems to be downward whenever we have a good season. Rockingham wrappers and fillers were iu active de-maud and sold well whenever they were fouud. Mr. D. A. Montgomery made fair sales on this market Thursday. Mr. J. A. Other coun-ties in North Carolina which have | passed through this same stage furnish ample evidence of the fact that people I who have been loudest in their protesta-tions against public improvements, and especially road improvement, have since become the staunehest cham-pions and endorsers of like progressive movements. As we have said before, Ihe county has everything to gain and nothing to lose by adopting the plan submitted by the Good I toads Club, i which IB declared sound and practical by the best business men in the county. Surely our country friends will not stand iu their own light by opposing the measure, which i* designed pri-marily to improve conditions through-out the county. The first benefits will be theirs. Practically every dollar of i the $300,000 that it is proposed tos|iend on road work will be expended within the borders of the county, as it is fair to presume that the gilt edged bonds i that would|be issued would command sufficient piemiuni to buy the road making equipment. And every dollar! involved will be outside capital brought here and added to the circulating me-dium of the county, giving an impetus 'to business that will be Celt for years. Dr. Burbank Attempts Suicide.
Temporarily cra/.ed from the effects
of morphine, Dr. W. F. Burbank, an
opthalmist of this city, attempted to
commit suicide iu his room at the Mc-
Adoo House Sunday afternoou by cut-ting
himself with a razor. He inflicted
a wound on his left wrist which bleed
freely, but which is not considered
fatal. After inflicting the wound, Dr.
Burbank lay down on his bed to bleed
to death, but was discovered in a few
minutes by a bell boy, who called
Chief Clerk John A. Tucker. Mr.
Tucker went immediately to the
wounded man and sent for Chief of
Police Scott and Dr. Edmund Harrison.
After stopping the flow of blood aikd
administering restoratives, Dr. Harri-son
said to the wounded man: "Doctor"
you did not use the r.iabr at the right
place if you wished to kill yourself."
"I know I did not" replied Dr. Bur-bank.

MARKET REPORT.
The receipts on our market for the
past week have not been as large as
they were for the previous weeks, owiug
to the harsh weather which we had,
preventing farmers from marketing
their tobacco. Prices showed a little
more animation and we consider all
grades of tobacco a little better than
they were for the previous week—we
would say from 2.5 cents to $1.00 per
hundred better. There is more life
and activity in the sales and our buyers
seem to be more anxious for tobacco
than they have been. The quality of
the offerings was about the same as for
previous weeks except on the first of
the week, when they were poorer than
they have been for some time. All
grades of desirable tobacco are in active
demand and we consider this a good
time for farmers to put their tobacco ou
the market, as the inclination of prices
seems to be downward whenever we
have a good season. Rockingham
wrappers and fillers were iu active de-maud
and sold well whenever they
were fouud.
Mr. D. A. Montgomery made fair
sales on this market Thursday.
Mr. J. A. Groomcwas on the market
Friday and made a fair average.

I abreast of the times in the matter of
public improvements. Other coun-ties
in North Carolina which have
| passed through this same stage furnish
ample evidence of the fact that people
I who have been loudest in their protesta-tions
against public improvements,
and especially road improvement, have
since become the staunehest cham-pions
and endorsers of like progressive
movements. As we have said before,
Ihe county has everything to gain and
nothing to lose by adopting the plan
submitted by the Good I toads Club,
i which IB declared sound and practical
by the best business men in the county.
Surely our country friends will not
stand iu their own light by opposing
the measure, which i* designed pri-marily
to improve conditions through-out
the county. The first benefits will
be theirs. Practically every dollar of
i the $300,000 that it is proposed tos|iend
on road work will be expended within
the borders of the county, as it is fair
to presume that the gilt edged bonds
i that would|be issued would command
sufficient piemiuni to buy the road
making equipment. And every dollar!
involved will be outside capital brought
here and added to the circulating me-dium
of the county, giving an impetus
'to business that will be Celt for years. I
The matter appeals to the common
good of the county and we want to see
it acted upon iu a manner that is be-coming
to the people of the most pro-gressive
county in the state. In these
days standing still is really retrogres-
