Huftinesis erecting a big brick building on his Ashe street lot, abutting the railroad. Mr. John M. Rose, of the Piedmont Cotton Company, has returned from Greenville, S. ('., and will be here sev-eral weeks. Mr. H. W. Cobb, vice president of the American Cigar Company, spent Saturday and Sunday among his many friends here. Crawford attended, in response to a special invitation, the Virginia .Methodist conference at Richmond last week. The Southern's Florida tourist train Conference of the County Superintendents. County Superintendent Wharton talked interestingly on his return from the late meeting ofcounty superintend-ents and other friends of public educa-tion held at Kaleigh last week, which was perhaps the largest aud in many respects the most important ever held in the state. About eighty counties, he said, were represented by county superintendents or members of the county board of education, when the superintendent could not attend. In addition there were present college presidents, professors, and other warm friends of education. Among the latter were Dr. Venable, of the University, Dr. Mclver, two ex-state superintend-ents— Messrs. Scarborough ana Mebane —Dr. Buttrick, and others too numer-ous to mention. The main purpose of the meeting was to find out by confer-ence and interchange of views with representatives present what were the present needs and wantsofthedifferent sections of the state as to public school matters, with the view of setting forth in a series of resolutions wliat was the sense of the large assembly ofeducators as to the changes in the present school law. State Superintendent Joyuer had ar-ranged a program for the consideration of the convention and important ques-tions were discussed mainly in short Mr. J. Sterling: Jones Enters Into Rest. Mr. J. Sterling Jones, one of the fore-most men of affairs in Greensboro, was called to his reward last Thursday at noon. It was a shock to the com-munity to learn of the death of this good citizen, notwithstanding the fact that his health had been faiiiug for months. Few had realized that the end was so near, and when the icy hand of Heath touched the fevered brow there were many who felt more deeply than words can express that the TOBACCO NOTES. To Prof. Wharton one of the most pleasant experiences of tlie meeting was to find out the high regard in which tlie old county of Guilford was held in this state in the matter of publicschool education. It seems to be the general opinion that in many respects Guilford is in the lead. If this be true it will be all the more important to work still harder or we shall soon find the leader-ship taken from us by such wide awake counties as Mecklenburg, Wake, with Mr. Jones in defense of tbe Southland in a time which tried men's souls. County Superintendent Wharton
talked interestingly on his return from
the late meeting ofcounty superintend-ents
and other friends of public educa-tion
held at Kaleigh last week, which
was perhaps the largest aud in many
respects the most important ever held
in the state. About eighty counties,
he said, were represented by county
superintendents or members of the
county board of education, when the
superintendent could not attend. In
addition there were present college
presidents, professors, and other warm
friends of education. Among the latter
were Dr. Venable, of the University,
Dr. Mclver, two ex-state superintend-ents—
Messrs. Scarborough ana Mebane
—Dr. Buttrick, and others too numer-ous
to mention. The main purpose of
the meeting was to find out by confer-ence
and interchange of views with
representatives present what were the
present needs and wantsofthedifferent
sections of the state as to public school
matters, with the view of setting forth
in a series of resolutions wliat was the
sense of the large assembly ofeducators
as to the changes in the present school
law.

Mr. J. Sterling: Jones Enters Into Rest.
Mr. J. Sterling Jones, one of the fore-most
men of affairs in Greensboro, was
called to his reward last Thursday at
noon. It was a shock to the com-munity
to learn of the death of this
good citizen, notwithstanding the fact
that his health had been faiiiug for
months. Few had realized that the
end was so near, and when the icy
hand of Heath touched the fevered
brow there were many who felt more
deeply than words can express that the
