The speech was enthusiastically re-ceived throughout. At its conclusion the convention was asked to decide whether the votes should be taken by townships or by precincts. The former was decided upon and each township was informed of the vote to wiiich it was entitled. There being 138 votes in the convention, the Chair announced that it would require 70 to nominate. Nominations were then declared in order. FOR THE SENATE. T. A. Lyon presentad the name of Hon. John N. Wilson. J. C. Burton presented the name of John C. Kennett. Prof. Whitsett presented the name of Hon. A. M. Scales. For good and sufllcient reasons the last named gentlemen urged that their names be withdrawn. Prof. Holt seconded the nomination of Mr. Wilson in an elegant little speech. FOR THE HOOSS. J. C. Burton nominated John C. Ken-nett. Seconded by A. M. Scales. C. H. Willson nominated John C. Bunch. Seconded by Prof. Whitaker. W. R. Land nominated Prof. T. E. Whitaker. The latter declined to be a candidate, stating that it would be im-possible for him to accept. FOR BBBBIPF. R. R. King nominated J. Henry Gil-mer and at once there wasadisposition to tender the nomination by acclama-tion. Mr. Burton presented the name of John W. Cook, but the latter stated he was in no sense a candidate. There being noother nominations the convention tendered Mr. Gilmer the honor by acclamation. FOR CLERK. R. A. Wheeler nominated John J. Nelson. Seconded by D. Schenck, Jr. W. O. Doggett uominated G. A. Ran-kin. Seconded by W. D. Wharton. Hon. A. L. Brooks nominated Hon. John L. King. Seconded by Mr. Rags-dale, Dr. Fox and J. A. Davidson. John Cannon nominated W. p. Mc- Lean, who withdrew. C. H. Ireland endorsed all the can-didates for this office aud submitted a few appropriate remarks. FOR REGISTER OF DEED*. Rev. A. G. Kirkman was the favorite | with the convention and he was placed in nomination by perhaps more than half a dozen gentlemen,each designat-ing him by some of the titles by which he is familiarly known, such as "Uncle Abe," "Brother Abe." "Abel Gardner," etc. At this point Prof. Holt, at the re-j quest of Mr. Gilmer, asked that the vote for sheriff be reconsidered and nominations for that office again be in order, other names having been men-tioned prior to the convention. The name of R. M. Rees was proposed but he promptly stated that he was not and had not been a candidate. The I nomination of Mr. Gilmer was again made by acclamation. Mr. Kirkman was then by acclama-tion made the nominee for Register of Deeds. FOR TREASl'&VH. Prof. Whitsett nominated W. H. McLean. Withdrawn. John C. Bunch nominated S. Starr Higgins. As Mr. Wilson was the only candi-date for the Senate his nomination was made unanimous. By the same method Messrs. Bunch and Kennett were nominated for the House.
