"SERVICE Is,.Our Most
Important Product"
Vol. I No.l
The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro, N. C.
April 1966
This is the first of what is hoped will become a regular monthly, or bi-monthly issue of
Pharmacy Bulletin. The purpose is to inform Medical and Dental staff as well as Nursing
and other professional personnel of new and timely drugs, new supplies, new equipment, as
well as additions, deletions or changes in those products currently in use and distributed
from the Pharmacy Department.
SODIUM HEPARIN INJECTION U. S. P,
.Potency designation
The Ui S. P. states the potency of Sodium Heparin is "not less than 120 U.S.P. Heparin Units
in each mg." establishing minimum contents without the expression of maximum limits. Hence,
Heparin may be cf considerably higher potency per milligram than required by U.S.P. therefore
the dose for Sodium Heparin Injection should be expressed in terms of Units and not mg.
Previously potency designation of 1 mg. was approximately equivalent to 100 units. Under
the present designation of strength there is no valid conversion possible and no realistic
way of equating Units of Heparin to mg.
Commercially available Heparins are labeled with contents in terms of Units. Although few
orders for Heparin continue to be expressed in "Germs of milligram we, in Pharmacy, have no
alternative but to relate the previous potency designation (l mg. approx. equiv. to 100 Units)
to these, orders and dispense the concentration which most nearly approximates the physician's
order.
