ROBERT L. PHILLIPS QHItP Of «II»'I«»V The Moses H.Cone Memorial Hospital GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA 2740S February 2, 1972 Mr. Caesar Cone President Board of Trustees Moses B. Cone Memorial Hospital Greensboro, North Carolina Dear Mr. Cone: After much deliberation and in order to give you ample time for consideration, I find that I cannot accept another three year appointment as Chief of Surgery. Certainly I will complete the present term which ends July 1, 1972. The co-operation I have had from the Operating Room personnel and physicians has been unbelievable. I have had to step on a few toes from time to time, but this is an accepted part of the job. Those times have been for poor manners in the Operating Room, and for some reason that is so important to me. I am indebted to the Board for allowing me to have such an honor - . especially to Ben Cone - without whose support I couldn't have done it. The Operating Room is running well. The plans for the new Operating Room are being completed. The ground work for a Surgical Teaching Program has been laid. I have never worked at a job any harder - with a group that was any better or a Board or Administrator that could have given me any more support. Sincerely, Robert L. Phillips, M. D.
