Today, deadly violence is
not for adults only. It is no
longer confined to large
metropolitan areas, nor is it a
problem for any one ethnic or
socioeconomic group. This
nation's youth have learned
that violence is the solution to
problems. They have learned
this from the media, the
entertainment industry and
from examples in their own
environment.
Statistics from the FBI
underscore this statement.
Overall violent crime has
leveled off since 1990, but
arrests of people under 18 for
violent crime rose 47% from
1988-1992.
The cycle of violence needs
to be broken if we are to see
any progress in this battle
against violence in our
communities. One of the

Health Initiative will have a
national observance on
October 11. In Greensboro
your Alliance will participate
with a Mayoral Declaration
and visit by the Mayor to an
after-school care program at
PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

skills to children. We can
also work through
community, church or school
based groups to get kids
involved in healthful

conflict resolution
presentation by local Alliance
members. The SAVE logo, on
a small, glossy sticker which
can be used on cars, windows,
etc., will be distributed at the
one of the many national
organizations which are
working to decrease such
violence.
The American Medical
Association Alliance, with its
SAVE program and your
participation, is active in this
fight against violence in all its
aspects in every part of the
lives of all Americans. The
AMA-A also provides essential
tools in the form of excellent
educational publications,
project information and
guidelines, leadership
training workshops and a
wealth of other resources.
Funding for this comes from
national membership dues.
