Heartbeat
A Wesley Long Community Hospital staff publication
February 1*+, 1986
Beginning with this issue, WLCH will
resume publication of Heartbeat for the
hospital staff. The new Heartbeat will
be distributed each Friday to all departments and nursing units, and a supply will
also be placed in the staff dining room
and physicians' lounge.
Departmental reporter kits have been
distributed, and each department manager
and patient care coordinator is responsible
for appointing a reporter from his or her
area. Any employee may submit news by first
checking with his or her departmental reporter
Please note the change in the frequency of
Heartbeat. Distribution is every Friday
rather than every other Friday. The deadline
for reporting news is each Monday by 12 noon.
You can help our staff newsletter be an
effective and timely means of communication
by sending news items or suggestions for
articles to the Public Affairs Department.
Also, any staff member who wishes to write
an article for Heartbeat may do so. Simply
forward your article(s) to your department
reporter or the Public Affairs Department
and we will use your by-line.

Few people could
have been more surprised to receive an
award than Willie Cherry
when he was introduced as
the Wesley Long Hospital
Employee of the Year for
1985 at the January Department Managers Meeting.
Director of Nurses Millie James introduced Willie and had these words to say:
"I am extremely pleased to announce that
Mr. Willie Cherry is the 1985 Employee of
the Year. Willie goes about his work
with quiet dignity and inner strength.
His dedication to our hospital and to his
patients is unsurpassed." And with that,
Willie received a standing ovation from
hospital directors and managers. Hospital
Director John Schrull added his congratulations and gave to Willie a plaque engraved
with these words: 'Wesley Long Community
Hospital, In Appreciation for Outstanding
Service and Leadership, 1985 Employee of
the Year.1
A 39-year veteran of Wesley Long, Willie
has become a face and personality which
many people say defines the hospital's
tradition of friendliness and genuine
caring. Perhaps the best example of the
special kind of relationship Willie has
with patients are those who ask especially
for him when they come back to Wesley Long.
Willie explains that his brand of caring
is simply based on getting to know his
patients. "I like to get patients to open
up to me." he said. "I sit down and take
time with them-get to know them and their
families. That makes them more at ease,
and when the patients are happy, that will
help the nurses and the hospital."
