The Spring - Wesley Long Hospital struck hard at the problem of nurse shortage and rising cost
of patient care and installed a Sitter Service. The sitters were engaged at $1 an
hour, compared with $20 an eight hour day for a registered nurse.
September 8th - An announcement was made that a $750,000 was provided from Health, Education
and Welfare to the Guilford County Health Department. This project headed by Dr.
Sarah T. Morrow, Director of the project, was aimed at providing comprehensive medical care for
children from low income families. Guilford County was the only county in the State which had
received one of these grants. Dr. Morrow stated that 18,000 children in the County in the age
group up to age 17 were in families whose income was under $3,000 a year.

September 20th - The^ old L. Richardson Hospital on West Washington Street was converted into an
86 bed nursing home.
October 27th - Dr. Curtis Artz, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the
Medical College of South Carolina, delivered the Herman Cone Lecture in the Public
Library. The topic was "Current Concepts in the Treatment of Shock". The previous speakers
were Dr. Dwight E. Harken of Harvard Medical School and Dr. Lewis Weinstein of Tuft Medical
School. The United Fund goal for the year was $1,163,102. Thirty-five member services were
present.
October 1st - The change over in Ambulance Service in Guilford County took place during the
night, superceding the long history of ambulance service by the funeral homes. The
Ambulance Service of Guilford went into business. The rate per trip up to 10 miles was $20 and
additional miles would be computed at $.75 per mile.
November 30th - The United States Public Health Service Report indicated that Guilford County's
rank in lung cancer was exactly that of the national average. In the United States,
as in Guilford County, lung cancer accounted for 17% of all cancer deaths. In the year ending
January 1, 1965, 294 cancer deaths were indicated in the County or 105 cancer deaths for every
100,000 people.
December 7th - Moses Cone Hospital announced $210,000 renovations. Before remodeling VsFOTe the
establishment of a Coronary Care Unit, Operating Room, Intensive Care Unit and
Cardiopulmonary Lab.
