Dear Doctor:
During this period of low patient volume, we want to share with you
information on the steps we have taken and the concerns we have.
We have taken virtually every possible step to reduce costs and
improve efficiency. As a general rule, departments have reduced worked
hours by 5 percent. Employees are being asked to take more time off.
Overtime has been drastically reduced. This has cut personnel costs, and
we have taken additional steps to control other costs in the area of
supplies, etc. Patients have been assigned to certain units in order to
concentrate the patient load and to promote even more efficient staffing.
The census for November is running about 77 percent, which is several
points lower than October and below what we had anticipated. This soft
census is of great concern to us, and if it continues additional cost
reduction steps will be necessary.
We have worked hard over the past several years to improve the morale
of employees and to assemble a highly skilled work force. Our retention
rate reflects this effort. We are deeply concerned that if the volume
does not improve further action will be necessary. Additional action
would have a greater impact on our employees.
Finally, in our continuing effort to serve your needs, you are
reminded that on the Friday after Thanksgiving all services will be open
and fully available for your use.
We are grateful for any help or advice you might give us.
