While many other businesses have the option of closing, we must remain in full operation. Our ability to do this depends on each and every employee, and you really came through during this crunch. We know many individuals took special measures to come to work, often waiting a long time for rides, carpooling with friends and other employees, and spending the night at the hospital in order to be here when you were needed. This is the kind of extra effort that makes Moses Cone Hospital a success. Our sincere thanks to you for your dedication and your many efforts to provide our patients with the best possible health care, no matter what the weather. T\ Cordially, Jennis R. Barry President James W. Albright Executive Vice President Ann Long, R.N., Nursing Division 6700, gets a ride home from a four-wheel drive vehicle owner. XJLs most of the city was awakening to discover a heavy snowfall on Thursday, January 22, Dan Finger, Director or Safety/Security at Moses Cone Hospital, and nursing administrative personnel were busy putting the hospital's snow plan into effect. Extra telephones were connected in the doctors' lounge, and a request went through the news media for volunteers with four- wheel drive vehicles to transport hospital personnel to and from work. "We had a tremendous response from the community," Finger said. "The National Guard assigned several vehicles and drivers to assist our hospital, and many private owners of four- wheel drive vehicles volunteered to transport hospital personnel." "Our employees, as usual, rose to the occasion," said Gene Tranbarger, Vice President of Nursing. The nursing administrative staff coordinated the staffing of the snow plan control station. "As the snow continued, management employees and staff from a number of departments joined nursing personnel in manning telephones to accept requests from employees who needed rides to work. Others grouped the addresses so that drivers would be able to pick up all passengers on each trip to a given area of the city. Other peo ple called employees to let them know when to expect to be picked up." The snow plan control station was manned around the clock. Many of these people who worked the late night shift slept at the hospital to be able to resume their posts at the snow plan control station at 5:00 the following morning. Tranbarger continued, "Our employees joined together as a family, expeditiously seeing that patients were receiving good care and also taking care of the staff who take care of our patients." When sleet and snow again fell in our area on the following Sunday, the snow plan control station continued from January 22 without a break for about a week. Weather forecasters said this was the most severe winter storm to hit our state in five years. The hospital provided food for the drivers and the volunteer workers, and reimbursed the vehicle owners for gasoline. "We appreciate the assistance we received from the National Guardsmen and the public- spirited citizens who transported our personnel safely to and from the hospital," said Executive Vice President Jim Albright. " I am also proud of our staff who made the effort to be on the job and those who gave extra time to make our snow plan work. This is just another example of the professionalism for which Moses Cone Hospital is well known."
