r e vi e w ® THE MOSES H. CONE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA NURSING EXCELLENCE AWARD GOES TO CINDY BUSSEY, RN LAB RETIRING 11 YEAR-OLD COMPUTER—NEW SYSTEM IN BY FEB. Cindy Bussey, 1983 Nursing Excellence Award recipient, is contratulated by Kathy Utz, who chaired this year's Nursing Excellence Program. Cindy Bussey, RN, a Nurse Clinician at The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, received the 1983 Nursing Excellence Award in a ceremony held at the hospital on September 21. She is the third Moses Cone Hospital nurse to receive this annual honor, which is bestowed by the hospital's Department of Nursing. Ms. Bussey was described by Head Nurse Mary Cook as a "positive force." Ms. Cook, who nominated Ms. Bussey for this honor, said "She gives 100 percent of herself to patients and co-workers. She is a nurse, teacher and patient advocate. She delivers quality patient care and is always seeking out new ways to improve that care." Ms. Bussey is actively involved in both civic and professional endeavors. She currently serves as Secretary of District Eight of the North Carolina Nurses Association and is a member of the American Nurses Association. She is a member of Hospice of Greensboro and serves as a Hospice volunteer. She is a member of the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association and serves as a CPR instructor for the local Heart Association. She is an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. Among her numerous achievements at Moses Cone Hospital, she developed, and continues to coordinate, a geriatric program; she teaches diabetes classes for hospital patients and community members; and she teaches CPR. She was one of the first nurse clinicians at Moses Cone Hospital. Ms. Bussey joined the hospital as a staff nurse in 1977, following graduation from the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Thelma M. Schorr, President and Publisher of the American Journal of Nursing Company, the featured speaker at the Nursing Excellence Awards ceremony, addressed the group on "Today's Realities and Tomorrow's Dreams." Ms. Schorr also conducted a workshop for nurses at the hospital earlier in the day. Other nominees for this award were Betty Baugess, Coronary Care; Kim Cates, Pediatrics; Janet Dawson, Emergency; Jane Des- per, Division 5500; Lola Furr, Surgical Intensive Care; Hope Gemer, Pediatrics; Betty Horton, Division 5000; Cindy Jones, Pediatrics; Jean Mabe, Division 5500; Faye Oliver, Division 2000; Janelle Pinkleton, Emergency; Mary Porter, IV Therapy; Betty Smith, Division 5000; Peggy Sorge, Division 5000; and Mary Wall, Division 5000. Training sessions for Laboratory personnel began August 15, 1983, in preparation for a new Laboratory Computer System, which is scheduled to be up and running by February, 1984. Terminals, connected with the new Laboratory replacement computer, will be located at all nursing stations. The new system will allow inquiries of Laboratory results from the Laboratory Computer to a printer in all intensive care areas. Eventually, order requesting can be done from these same terminals. The new computer will be temporarily housed in Room 1010, but new construction plans call for eventual relocation of the equipment in the renovated blood bank area of the present Laboratory. The new computer equipment is expected ANESTHESIA DEPARTMENT RESTRUCTURED Anesthesiologists, who were formerly Moses Cone Hospital employees , have formed a private practice called Community Anesthesia Service. Under a contractual agreement, they will continue to perform anesthesia services at Moses Cone Hospital. Due to this new arrangement, the organizational and management structure of Anesthesia Department has been adjusted. Lonnie Bunn has been named Director for Cardiopulmonary Services, which includes the administration of the Anesthesia Department in addition to his current administrative responsibilities for Non-Invasive Cardiology Services, EEG, Respiratory Therapy and Pulmonary Function Laboratory. The Recovery Room, which previously was part of the Anesthesia Department, has become a division of the Department of Nursing Services under the Supervision of Dorothy Whedbee, Clinical Director, and Jean Pass, Head Nurse. to arrive in October, and further training sessions for both Laboratory and Nursing personnel will be held in November, December, 1983, and January, 1984. A Laboratory committee, comprised of Dr. Charles Hassell, Tommy Weisner, Dewey Taylor, Anne Towne, Brenda Roberts and Sally Mills, selected the new system after examining several different laboratory systems marketed by various vendors. A contract between the hospital and Sun- quest Information Systems of Tucson, Arizona, was signed by Hospital President Dennis R. Barry on May 17, 1983. The current Laboratory computer system, which has given reliable service, is being replaced after approximately 11 years of service. MIKE COUGHLIN JOINS AHEC Mike T Coughlin has been appointed Director of Audiovisual Resources for the Greensboro Area Health Education Center, which is located at Moses Cone Hospital. He comes to the AHEC from Randolph Technical College in Asheboro where he has served since 1978 as Coordinator of Audiovisual Services in the Learning Resources Center. Mr. Coughlin holds a bachelor of science degree from North Carolina State University and a master's degree with major in educational media from Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, North Ca olina.
