Co-Chairpersons of the task force Jack Upton, Director of Pharmacy Services, and Nellie Elliott, Clinical Director for Emergency Services, say that "while services to our patients are being delivered with a quality of care we can all be proud of, there are some basics in the operation of the hospital which cannot be overlooked." Mrs. Elliott, Mr. Upton and the three task force members, Gloria Hall, Administrative/Program Director of Radiology; Alan Gorrod, Director of Rehabilitation; and Leonard REVIEW DECEMIIER 1<>82 ® INSIDE: Department Spotlight 3 Christinas Party 3 Enjoying the Holidays 4 Dickey, Facilities Management Director, have already begun making tours of the building to determine how employees and the facilities "present to patients and visitors." The task force has asked department heads to make lists of basic routine responsibilities and conditions which can be improved. A list might include items such as: (a) Is equipment working properly? Is it clean? (b) Do all light switches work, or do light bulbs need replacing? (c) Are visitors greeted cheerfully and asked if they need assistance? (d) Are telephone manners friendly and courteous? (e) Is patience shown even in trying situations? These lists will be combined into a single list of basic standards which will serve as a guide throughout the hospital. "We need to be very careful and mindful of what is occurring within our institutional setting, how our actions are being perceived and what we can do to accomplish the hospital's mission of providing services in a humane, caring way," Mr. Upton said. "We don't want to be so wrapped up in new systems and procedures that we forget to take care of basic responsibilities that we are also charged with. The overall goal of the hospital is not only to improve the level of care and services we are currently providing, but to keep in mind the fundamentals of health care we are committed to provide." The task force expects to have the Back to Basics program well underway by the end of the year. "This should be a learning and growing situation for all of us," Mr. Upton added. "We do not expect this program to be a one-time thing but an ongoing effort." REVIEW Moses Cone Hospital 1200 North Elm Street Greensboro, North Carolina 27401- 1020 Non Profit Org.
