review ® THE MOSES H. CONE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL Initial Approval Granted Building To Meet Community Needs Architect's Rendering of New Addition Certificate of Need applications for the hospital's proposed $32.6 million construction project have been filed with the local Piedmont Health Systems Agency (PHSA) and with the State of North Carolina. These applications were reviewed initially and approved on February 25 by the Project Review Committee of the PHSA. The PHSA full Board of Directors will review the applications on March 17 for recommendation to the state. Following state approval of this rREVIEW (Zfc MARCH 1982 ^Q5^ INSIDE: Our Mission: Community Doctors are Alive and Well 3 (3rd in a series) Cancer Screening 2 TDA or IRA?. project, the hospital will begin the bidding process for selection of a construction contractor. In keeping with the hospital's commitment to the community, the project will provide 127,000 square feet of modernization of the existing facilities as well as a six story addition encompassing 167,450 square feet of new space adjoining the west end of the existing building. A larger number of private patient rooms will be developed through this project, and bathrooms, and showers will be provided in all patient rooms. Expanded space for key support services, including Medical Intensive Care, Labor and Delivery Rooms, Nurseries, Rehabilitation Services, Laboratories, Food Service, special diagnostic services and additional administrative space, will be provided. The project will also provide additional adult inpatient beds (including Rehabilitation beds) to meet the needs of our growing community. Although the hospital is licensed for 489 beds, the current bed complement is 456. The forecasted number of beds in ser vice following completion of this project is 549, which is an increase of 93 beds in service over the current bed complement. This project will be financed principally out of income from the hospital's endowment and from operations and will not require any significant amounts of borrowed capital or related interest costs. This plan of financing will thereby avoid any major impact on hospital charges. Construction will be completed in four phases and is expected to require almost four years for final completion. Ground breaking is currently scheduled for October 1. This project has received significant medical staff and community support. In response to a request from Dr. E. L. Bryan, President of the Medical Board, Mr. Alan Cone, Chairman of the hospital's Board of Trustees, and Hospital President Mr. Dennis R. Barry, the hospital has received 110 letters of support from the medical staff and about 50 letters from business, government and community leaders. The hospital is grateful for this level of support.
