The new system will not only save money for the hospital, it also will have the capacity to grow as the hospital grows, it will be easier to maintain, and it will be easier to use. Cut-over from the old system to the new is targeted for June 1,1984. Following investigation of five different telecommunication systems, an agreement was reached between the hospital and Centel Business Systems, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for the purchase of a new SL1-XL system manufactured by Northern Telecom. This same system is presently being installed in offices of the City of Greensboro and Guilford County. Integon Insurance, Fieldcrest Mills in Eden, Northwestern Bank in North Wilkesboro, and Randolph Hospital, Eden, are among organizations in this area currently using this same system. This is the third telephone system to be installed here during the hospital's 31 year history, but it is our first system to be owned. The previous systems were installed under a rental agreement with Southern Bell. The new system utilizes an on-site computer which gives us the ability to program individualized service to each station in the hospital. This system will have many more features than the current system with each telephone tailored for individual users. During April, each department will be surveyed to determine its telecommunication needs. The new system is different from the system now in use but is easy to use. Beginning May 14, all employees in the hospital will learn to use the new telephones in round-the-clock training sessions conducted by Centel Business Systems instructors. You may have noticed activity already taking place to prepare for installation of the new system; workmen are pulling cable throughout the building. Much of the preliminary work will take place in the computer room in the new wing where the brains of the new system will be located. The hospital will continue to utilize North Carolina WATS lines and beeper paging via this new telephone system. During the first year after installation, a technician from Centel will be stationed on the premises Monday through Friday to handle telephone repairs, moves, and changes. Centel will support emergency repairs seven days per week, 24 hours a day as needed. All telephone services will be coordinated by our Communications Department.
