MEDICAL STAFF PHYSICIANS' AND DENTISTS' NEWSLETTER © THE MOSES H. CONE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL THE WOMEN'S HOSPITAL OF GREENSBORO Emergency Department: "Express Care" On December 10,1990, Moses Cone Hospital's Emergency Department began a new program called "Express Care" for the treatment and care of minor illnesses. Its purpose is to expedite treatment of those patients seen for minor illnesses and injuries; the objective is to have the patient treated within one hour. The hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week. The area is staffed separately from the Emergency Department. The Emergency Medicine Service has provided a dedicated physician to this area, and members of the Medical and Dental Staff may also see their patients in this area. Diagnoses that can be managed within this setting will be limited to: simple abrasions and contusions, animal bites, simple burns without debridement, ear aches, extremity injuries (closed), headache, injections (tetanus toxoid), simple insect bites, medical allergic reactions, med only orders, extremity muscle strains and sprains, simple lacerations, puncture wounds (uncomplicated), rashes, patient re-checks, suture removal, toothache, tonsillitis, male urological and minor facial complaints. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Warren Crow, R.N., Head Nurse, or Dr. Norman Mayer of the Emergency Department. Medical Library Expansion The Medical Library of Moses Cone Hospital will expand to house 4he new Greensboro Medical Historical Library. The historical library will include artifacts, memorabilia, books, old medical instruments and the history of Moses Cone Hospital. Dr. Robert Phillips organized this project including the funding for the library, which is being built by total donations from the Medical Staff, the community and Moses Cone Hospital. The expansion is expected to be completed by March, 1991. Optifast Program After 16 months of operation, the Optifast Program has enrolled over 400 patients with 174 patients having completed the 26-week Optifast Program. The Optifast Program was recently selected by Sandoz Nutrition as one of the 12 sites nationwide to participate in a physician referral tracking study. A key goal of the study is to evaluate how the clinic can best meet the needs of area physicians in dealing with the chronic disease of obesity. Dr. Eric Dean, Optifast Medical Director, and Lyn Richardson, R.D. M.Ed., Director of the Optifast Program, will be contacting area physician offices to more fully describe services available. For further medical information, please contact Dr. Dean at 272-9227. Recycling Success After only a few months, the recycling program at Moses Cone Hospital is a huge success. Since the program began in October, employees at both hospitals have recycled 22,122 pounds (11.1 tons) of paper. Both hospitals are recycling 46 percent of all copier and computer paper purchased. JANUARY 1990 The Women's Hospital of Greensboro The move of all maternity services to The Women's Hospital went smoothly. Phase II construction on The Women's Hospital of Greensboro began December 13. The contractor on the project is CJ. Kern. Phase II construction will take nine to ten months. The project will involve the construction of additional parking, a new main drive for the hospital with a loop for patient pick-up and a new main entrance. On the ground floor, this project will provide a new admitting area and lobby, a large gift shop, a chaplain's office and chapel and a babysitting area. On the first floor, Phase II will create new space for patient and community education with all prenatal classes being held at The Women's Hospital. There will also be a patient and community health library. This construction will also permit The Women's Hospital to expand education courses and eventually add support groups and other programs dealing with women's health issues. The laboratory at The Women's Hospital of Greensboro recently received accreditation from the College of American Pathologists. This accreditation is extremely strict in the following areas: testing protocol, record keeping, specimen collection and reporting of results. To prepare for the accreditation, laboratory staff spent approximately 4jQ00_ hours over a two-year period rewriting the laboratory procedure manual and incorporating those procedures into standard laboratory practice. Cardiac Rehabilitation Program Effective January 1,1991, Dr. Henry Smith will become the new Medical Director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Moses Cone Hospital. Dr. William Gamble has served as Medical Director since the program began in November, 1985. He was instrumental in the development of the program. His dedication and contributions to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program are greatly appreciated. Travelers Managed Care Program We are pleased to announce our continued relationship with Travelers. An agreement was signed with them as hospital providers in their managed care program, which is expanding in the Triad area.
