Library Committee Report. 1990-1991
The library has continued to maintain a high level of service to our own
hospital community as well as to the AHEC region. The annual statistics
indicate a high plateau in some areas, continued growth in others. A total of
31,800 reference services were provided, including answering questions,
photocopying, and circulating Current Contents. There is an ongoing review
of the journal holdings to meet reference requests while reducing the rising
costs of inter-library loans. There has also been a substantial improvement
in the turnaround time for obtaining outside materials.
Over 1000 computerized literature searches were conducted, using
Grateful Med and our new subscription to CD-ROM. This latter database
allows searches without on-line charges, and the savings in this first year
more than covered the subscription cost. Physicians and other members of
the hospital community are invited to learn how to use these services,
individually or in groups (e.g., journal clubs).
The special highlight of the year has been the continuing progress toward
establishing The Greensboro Medical Historical Library under the inspiration
and continued stewardship of Dr. Robert Phillips. As many of you have seen,
the building is completed, extending from the main library, and display
cases have been purchased by a special appropriation of the Greater
Greensboro Society of Medicine. Selection of the collection for display and
scholarly reference will proceed from this point.
