Are you GRATEFULLY aware:
Does MEDLINE "make a difference?" Recently, the National Library
of Medicine conducted a detailed study of more than 1100 MEDLINE
searchers and users. Many physicians indicated that personal
access to MEDLINE has made such a significant difference in the way
they practice that they believe all medical students should be
trained in its use. "Within the area of patient care, for example,
users report instances in which information was frequently critical
to choosing the most appropriate diagnostic test; reaching the
current (or any) diagnosis; developing and carrying out a sound
treatment plan...insuring adequate continuity of care, modifying
health risk behaviors and carrying out responsibilities with
respect to medical benefits reimbursements."
The most recent version of GRATEFUL MED. a user friendly program
to search MEDLINE, is available in the Library. If you would like
to "try it out" or would like a demonstration for your journal
club, call the Library to schedule a time.
SEARCH TIP
Zero Positions -- Don't believe it
Don't trust a result zero postings. Before you assume there
is nothing in the database or make extensive revisions to your
strategy double check the simple things like spelling, format of
commands, use of too many Boolean ANDs. etc. Most online systems
aren't too helpful in identifying your input errors.
HISTORY NOTES
Local history of medicine will be featured in the new display case
next to the telephone operators' area. Dr Robert Phillips is the
curator of this case and will be filling it with facts, fiction and
funnies on the history of medicine.
Hours: Mon-Fri. 8am - 10pm Sat. 9am - 2pm Sun. 2pm - 6pm
