Old North State News 1887 1993 President's Letter During the past few months Old North State Medical Society members have been busy making known our preferences on health-care reform in our state and nation. Reform on either the national or local level will require our remaining alert and involved in order to retain our "market share" of health-care delivery. As president of Old North State Medical Society, 1 am a non-voting member of the North Carolina Medical Society Executive Council and. in that capacity, I represented ONSMS on September 19 at a meeting held as part of the NCMS Annual Meeting; reports from the state health director and the board of medical examiners were discussed. ONSMS was also represented at the NCMS Annual Session, Adams Mark Hotel in Charlotte, November 4-7. A major discussion al this meeting centered around a report on the health care access committee's Essential Benefits Project. This report, funded by the Kate B. Reynolds Health Care Trust, analyzes a defined list of diagnosis.'treatment pairs and categorizes those pairs as essential, desirable, or optional medical and health services. The major problem at the meeting appeared to be the failure to integrate psychiatric diagnoses prior to release of the report. Persons interested, may obtain copies by contacting Ms. Campbell. Prior to the NCMS Annual Session. I was appointed by lYesidenl E. Maxton Mauney, Jr. of Asheville to the eight- member Executive Vice President Search Committee, eliaired by NCMS Treasurer Carolyn R. Ferree, M.D. of Winston- Salem. Dr. Fence is accepting applications for this position. All applications should be addressed to Dr. Fence, NCMS, P. O.
