Introduction of David Dorst Claytor
November 13, 1991
We are so fortunate in having Dave give the community
"The History of Pharmacy in Greensboro." Nobody is better
qualified. He enjoys the respect and admiration not only of his
peers but from all of us. He is our link with the past and
at the same time represents pharmacy in this area of the
Piedmont for the past decades. He has put an enormous amount
of time into this presentation...as others have...consulted
many people...unearthed many people and facts that would have
probably been lost perhaps forever.
Pharmacy, like many other professions connected with the
wheel of medicine, has been one of the strongest spokes. No
one could count the ways they have helped our
patients...highly educated...available...helpful...real
friends to us all. Dave represents all of the above.
Dave was born in Hillsborough, N.C. in 1922. His Father,
who died in 1949, was superintendent of the Orange County
Schools. His Mother, was an elementary school teacher, who
died in 1985 at the age of 98 1/2 so Dave, we hope, has a long
way to go.
He entered the UNC School of Pharmacy in 1941...a slight
detour with World War 11 as a Bombardier and gunner in the 8th
Air Force, European Theatre and was discharged as 1st
Lieutenant in October 1945 and resumed his studies at Chapel
Hill...being in the service didn't teach him a thing about
choice of schools!...He was President of the School of
Pharmacy Student Body in 1947 and received his B.S. degree in
1948. In this year he worked at City Hospital in Winston-
Salem and came to Greensboro in 1949 to the Crutchfield
Browning Drug Store. The next year, 1950, he was lucky enough
to marry Doris Thomas, a young lady who practiced nursing
until about 6 years ago. Dave and Doris have two children and
wouldn't you know, both girls are pharmacists...the ultimate
compliment...one in Pittsburgh and the other in Atlanta. 3
grandchildren. In 1956 he and Sam McFalls opened the Medical
Center Pharmacy at the corner of Church and what we know now
as East Wendover... right across from professional village.
Not a bad move, Dave! He retired in 1984.
Dave's curriculum vitae is long and will be available in
its entirety in Volume 111 of the History of Medicine in
Greensboro. Two, no small feats, are the additions of being
made President of the North Carolina Pharmaceutical
Association in 1984 and in 1988, being awarded the
distinguished service award from the School of Pharmacy, UNC,
Chapel Hill.
To those that don't know him, let me introduce you to a
pretty neat fellow. Dave Claytor.
