Everybody has their own mental image that they
visualize when they hear the word "nurse". Some see
an angel of mercy in white.

Some think of the cool hand to the fevered brow.
Nurse touching a patient.
Others think of a physician's handmaid.
Nurse on rounds with a doctor.
All are true and yet none of these are ture.
At the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital we believe
that nursing is primarily assisting the individual (sick

It is readily apparent from these concepts that
nursing occurs around the clock, seven days a week, in all

The Department of Nursing has approximately 550
employees and usually is the largest single department
in any hospital and generally employs about one half
of the entire hospital staff. It is seen as a very
expensive department with an annual payroll of about 5.5
million dollars. Yet it is also apparent that it is for
nursing care that patients enter hospitals. Everything
could be availalbe on an outpatient basis except round
the clock nursing care.
Organizational chart
The Department is organized along rather traditional
lines with a head nurse in charge of each nursing division
