Greensboro Hospital VTFWPQint August 1988 Executive by Jim Brexler Executive Vice President o ur "new beginning" is almost three months old and I am pleased to report to you that the Hospital is doing very well. Times of change and transition are never easy, but as I have walked around the Hospital and met and talked with many of you, I have a strong sense that we have put past issues aside and that we are confidently looking toward our future. Several key activities are well underway: The Repair and Clean Up Task Force has completed tours of the Hospital and the tabulation of its survey evaluations forms. They are now initiating efforts to "clean up," "fix up," "shore up" and "shape up" our facility. We have already begun to see a difference in the appearance of the grounds, and recently the Stepdown Unit was given a face lift. Other public areas are soon to be improved. We're cleaning up, fixing up, shoring up and shaping up. We are also in the process of meeting with key physicians who might utilize ou r Hospital more often duringthis next year. I havemetwith several physicians in this regard, and feel very positive about our discussions. Finally, planning for the conversion to a Women's and Infants' Hospital has begun. LaVonne Beach and I, along with other members of the W & I Planning Team, made visits to 3 facilities of this type. We are busy generating ideas for our new program and are very excited about the future! Our ultimate success; however, will be dependent on our ability to return to the history that this Hospital has of providing quality patient care with a high degree of personal touch. We must take pride in what we do. We must present ourselves and our services to our patients and guests with confidence and in a caring manner. I look forward to working with each and every one of you in developing a long and successful relationship. Greensboro Hospital Gets JCAHO Accreditation Greensboro Hospital has been awarded a Certificate of Accreditation for a three year period by the ]oint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO). Three years is the longest accreditation awarded by JCAHO, and it confirms Greensboro Hospital's efforts to provide quality health care. To become accredited, Greensboro Hospital voluntarily requested an on-site evaluation by JCAHO surveyors who applied standards designed to enhance quality patient care and the safety of the environment in which that care is provided. These national standards representaconsensusamong health care professionals and are periodically updated to reflect changes in health care delivery. The JCAHO team consists of health care professionals trained to evaluate the hospital's efforts to provide quality care. The surveyors also consult with the professional and administrative staffs to help them in their efforts to continually improve patient care. The accreditation, based on realistic, nationally recognized standards, may facilitate the recruitment standards or certification of professional staff members. JCAHO is a private, non-profit organization created by and composed of health care professionals. Looking Good! Things are looking good around Greensboro Hospital. The beautification work being done on the Hospital grounds has been coordinated by the Plant Operations summer grounds crew. Crew members included crew chief, Jeffrey Wulfhorst, a junior at Appalachian State University; Kevin Burnett, a senior at Page High School; and Jason Rhew, a senior at Southeast High School. The trio has braved sweltering heat to trim the slope in front of the Hospital, and plant, water and care for the marigolds and other plant beds around the campus. No easy task! Their efforts have paid off though... patients, visitors and hospital staff are all enjoying the results of| their hard work.
