Loretha Caldwell Foushee grew up in the Terra Cotta community, located in Southwest Greensboro near the corner of West Wendover and Norwalk Street. Wendover Avenue, called Clifton Road before 1971, was originally a two-lane unpaved road. The Caldwells raised chickens and pigs, had gardens and fruit trees (apple, pear, plum, peach and hickory nut), and only went to town to visit the doctor or buy staples like flour or sugar. Terra Cotta is still a distinct community and holds homecoming festivals every year.
