CC013 George Gabriel and Gabriel Groceries Collection [Personal Collection]
Collection description
George Gabriel was a small business owner who operated two grocery stores in East Greensboro. The Gabriel Grocery was located at the corner of East Market Street and Dean, and Gabriel's Food Center was at the corner of Dean and West Washington Street. The latter was situated diagonally across from Bennett College, and became very popular with the young women of Bennett College. Mr. Gabriel was very generous with store credit – and also with small loans to local people who were looking for money to start a business – and the students respected him and frequented his stores. This collection, primarily of copies of pages with student autographs to Mr. Gabriel, demonstrates the affection and respect they had for him. His son, local attorney Richard Gabriel, worked at his father’s grocery stores, until he went to Duke University, in the early 1960s.
