Korean Dancer To Appear In Chapel
Won Kyung Cho, Korean classical dancer, scholar and critic, will
appear in a recital in Dana Auditorium on Friday, April 2. His visit
here is part of a tour arranged for
him by the Arts, Program of the
Association of American Colleges.
Dr. Cho was graduated with an
M.A. degree from Yonsei University
in 1955. For the next five years he
was assistant professor and visiting
lecturer in Korean Literature and
Dance at Yonsei University, Ewha
Women's University, and other colleges in Seoul. Over a period of ten
years he performed at the National
Theatre and City Hall Theatre, conducted his own dance studio in
Seoul, and served as dance critic
for four of Korea's leading newspapers.
He came to tire United States in
1960 and studied at Juilliard School
of Music and the Martha Graham
School of Contemporary Dance. He
has given dance recitals at Carnegie
Recital Hall and the Seattle World's
Fair, and has also given recitals,
lecture - demonstrations, workshop
seminars and classroom lectures at
leading colleges, universities, museums and television stations
throughout the country. He is the
author of an illustrated booklet,
Dance of Korea, pubhshed in New
York in 1962.
Dr. Cho choreographed and performed in "Teahouse of the August
Moon" at the Hodges Gardens
Summer Theatre in Louisiana. He
was recently awarded the Doctor
of Fine Arts degree from Monmouth College. He was a visiting
professor at the University of Wisconsin in the fall of 1963 and 1964,
and at the University of Washington in the summer of 1964.
In his solo concerts of ten different dances, representing the court,
folk and religious types, Dr. Cho
uses a dazzling variety of Oriental
costumes, masks, props and authentic music.
As an "extra dimension" provided
by the Arts Program's visit plan,
he also offers a lecture-demonstration with slides on Korean dance
and music, and a comparison of
Korean, Japanese and Chinese
dance movements and interpretations.
