This oral history interview conducted by William Chafe circa 1978 with Walter Johnson Jr. primarily documents Johnson's membership on the Greensboro school board in the 1970s. Topics include the 1971 integration of schools and controversy surrounding the board's decisions; the role of Owen Lewis; board members Dick Hunter, Al Lineberry, Carson Bain, and Otis Hairston; school zoning; competency testing; bringing black and white children to equal education levels; and changing perceptions of race in younger generations. Other topics include the cafeteria workers' strike; Greensboro's focus on what's good for business and business leaders' control of city politics; changes in race relations and methods of protest in Greensboro since the fifties; the Greensboro Men's Club; and the role of black universities in Greensboro.
