Greensboro Community Council 220 Church Street Greensboro, N. C. HERBERT I. KENNY Telephone 3-2802 Executive Director Talk made by Dr. Gordon W. Lovejoy, at The Greensboro Community Council December 21, 195U on A COMMUNITY APPROACH TO BETTER HUMAN RELATIONS Introduction by Dr. Robert M. Dinkel, Professor of Sociology, Guilford College: Our speaker has a very distinguished record. I think the facts will indicate his great competency. He received his Bachelor's degree and Master's degree from the University of Florida - the first in 1935 and the second in 1938. He received his Ph.D from the University of North Carolina in 19iil. He was Chairman of the Department of Sociology at Furman University in 19ljl and 191*2. During the war he served in the Navy as an officer and, after the war, was Professor of Sociology and Dean of Men at Lynchburg College. He left there in 19U7 to become Bronson Professor of Human Relations at the University of Miami, which post he served from 19hl to 1950. He has conducted seminars on Human Relations at the University of Kentucky from 1951 to 195u« He is completing his third year as visiting Professor of Sociology at Guilford College, and is also teaching at Greensboro College. He is the Educational Consultant for the National Conference of Christians and Jews in their Southeastern Division. In 1949 he received a very distinguished award, a National Citation in Education from the Anti-Defamation League. He received this award for teaching and research in the field of human relations. He has published a variety of things, one that I would like to mention - "Paths to Maturity: The North Carolina Youth Survey." This was the most extensive youth survey ever made. It is my pleasure to introduce such a distinguished speaker - Dr. Gordon Lovejoy. Dr. Lovejoy: Seated down behind this lectern, I feel very much like a Christmas package: kept out of sight until the proper moment, it pops forth into full view. I find, also, after so gracious an introduction, that I have decided where I wish to be buried. You know as you grow older you begin to think about such things - you begin to look around for a place where you will have a good eulogy and where all of the proper things will be taken into consideration. I think Greensboro is the proper place and if I could just have Dr. Dinkel assist the pastor, I feel the obsequies would be in complete order. FOR TEAMWORK AND PLANNING IN COMMUNITY SERVICE
