Re:
Appeal of Student Senate, UNC-G
Re Neo-Black Society
Dear Mr. Curtis:
As you know, the Board of Trustees of the University of North
Carolina at Greensboro will meet in special session June 4, 1973, to hear
the appeal in caption in which you represent the appellant, the Student Senate.
The hearing will begin promptly at 10:00 a. m., Monday, June 4, 1973, in Alderman Lounge of Elliott Hall, second floor, new wing, and hopefully will be
completed during the day. I call your attention to the fact that some of the
members of the Board will have to travel considerable distances to attend this
meeting, and your cooperation in expediting the hearing will be much appreciated.
I enclose a copy of ground rules governing this hearing, adherence
to which I trust you will find to be in furtherance of both the expedition of the
hearing and due process.
Very truly yours,
SMITH, MOORE, SMITH, SCHELL & HUNTER

Description
This May 25, 1973, letter from attorney Beverly C. Moore to Michael K. Curtis, attorney representing the UNCG Student Government Association (SGA) in its appeal against Chancellor James Sharbrough Ferguson's decision on the status of the Neo-Black Society outlines ground rules for the June 4, 1973, appeal hearing. The procedures and issues of the appeal are outlined, as are the mechanisms for recording testimony. On March 26, 1973, SGA had voted to reclassify (removed funding and recognition from) the Neo-Black Society. The SGA decision was overturned by university administration on the basis of faulty evidence and improper procedure by SGA, resulting in an eventual legal case that led to the Neo-Black Society's reinstatement as a recognized and funded organization.
