The 1973 UNCG yearbook, Pine Needles, depicts an overall consciousness towards social issues by the student body at time when the campus is integrated and the student Neo-Black Society is active. This selection of pages gives an idea of race relations on campus during the mid-1970s. Included is a typical page of class portraits showing a representative black to white student ratio. Also included are an interview and an essay with African American workers that reflect a theme of social consciousness that runs throughout this yearbook. An essay and series of reprinted letters concerning a program by the Neo-Black Society reflects an uneasy dialogue between students concerning different views on "the Black Experience."
