Elliott Hall
Dear Mr. Chestnut:
This letter is in response to your appeal of the decision of
the Student Senate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro
to reclassify the Neo-Black Society as an organization from Type II
to Type I.
Acting upon the recommendation of the Faculty Committee
that was asked to review this matter and advise me accordingly, I
have ruled that the reclassification is invalid. The grounds for this
action are set forth in my letter of this date to Miss Jacqueline Coleman
and in the official report of the Faculty Committee, copies of which
are enclosed.
I wish to add a further statement which I hope will prevent
misunderstanding. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro
reaffirms its commitment to a policy of nondiscrimination with respect
to race, color, sex, religion, and national origin. It accepts the
moral and legal responsibility to conduct its affairs in such a way as
to provide equal treatment and equal rights to all its students and to
all organizations on campus.
We seek your cooperation and that of other student leaders
in the positive implementation of the nondiscriminatory policy of the
University.
ncerely,
ames S. Ferguson

These two letters written by UNCG Chancellor James Ferguson explain and justify his actions to reverse the decision of the UNCG Student Government Senate to reclassify the Neo-Black Society. The Student Government Senate held a hearing to determine whether the Neo-Black Society should be reclassified in a way that would strip its funding as a student organization. Their decision to reclassify brought protests from the Neo-Black Society and the chancellor subsequently appointed an ad-hoc faculty group to review the situation. As a result of the faculty review, the chancellor reversed the student senate's decisions. These letters to Neo-Black Society coordinator and Student Government Association officers, explain the chancellor's decision to revese the Student Senate's decision and thereby maintaining the Neo-Black's Society's classification as a Type II student organization.
