NELSON JOHNSON JAILED Government Agents, Klan and Nazis Free! Nelson Johnson, Communist Workers Party member, was jailed in Greensboro Wednesday morning, July 29, 1981, for contempt of court. Johnson vowed a hunger strike for the duration of his jail term. The reason for the hunger strike is to "protest being held as a political prisoner and to demand that government agents, Klan and Nazis be punished for their crimes." The following is a statement released by Johnson before being jailed. STATEMENT BY NELSON JOHNSON ON CONTEMPT CHARGES AND JAIL SENTENCE Today, the Klan/Nazis and their government co-conspirators who planned and carried out the murders of five members of the CWP on November 3, 1979, are completely free. The Supreme Court of the State of North Carolina has joined in the government's cover-up of the truth about November 3rd by upholding the lower courts conviction of me. I have been found in contempt of court for speaking in my defense in court against the outrageous attempt to raise my bail from $15,000 to $115,000. The initial charge "participating in a riot" on which the bail was based, has never had any legal or factual basis. There was no riot; there was a Massacre. There was no "shoot-out;" there was an assassination. All orchestrated by the government. What has happened since November 3rd has been a huge and continuing cover-up of the role of the Government in the murders. A few examples: —The court has tried only 6 of more than 35 (9 carloads) of the Klan/Nazis and not even one of the government participants in the murders. --Conspiracy charges against those 6 were dropped. —In a total mockery of justice, all 6 Klan/Nazis were freed on the basis of self-defense, although they were seen and filmed calmly shooting people down. —Federal agents and Nazis planned together to bomb downtown Greensboro, but there were no convictions in the Asheville trial recently. —The only persons the court has found guilty of anything in relation to the November 3rd murders are Dr. Marty- Nathan, Mrs. Floris Cauce and Tom Clark. Marty and Floris were widowed by the November 3rd Massacre. Tom Clark was injured. All were found in contempt of court and served 30 days in jail! Isn't this incredible? What I have outlined is merely the tip of the iceberg. Yes, there is contempt. In the words of Tom Clark, "I have nothing but contempt for the court!" I will not contribute one bit of respectability to the court by pretending that it anything except a disgusting, hypocritical, repressive control mechanism for the rich. So I take my stand. My will is unbroken. It will not be broken because I have confidence in the justness and power of the people. The court is a lie. The truth will prevail. The massacre of November 3rd, along with the terrifying of the Black community of Morningside Homes, was a terrible social tragedy. That tragedy, as terrible as it was, is not isolated. The Buffalo stabbings, the Atlanta child murders, and the Mobile lynching immediately come to mind. Beyond these blatant examples, millions of people will be pushed to the very brink of death by huge budget cuts and continued high prices. In fact, thousands of people will actually starve or freeze to death this winter. This is something that most of us can already see and feel. This is the context in which Reagan has risen to power. This is the setting also in which the right wingers, from the moral majority, to the klan and nazis, to Senator Jesse Helms, are being promoted by the bourgeoisie. Their purpose is to destroy the legitimate resistance which is bound to grow from the continuing downward plunge of the people's standard of living. Nelson speaks: "So, I take my stand. My will is unbroken. It will not be broken because I have confidence in the justness and power of the people. The court is a lie. The truth will prevail."

Johnson was involved in the Death to the Klan march in Greensboro on November 3, 1979 where five Communist Workers Party members were killed. In his statement, Johnson also elaborates and protests the prosecution of six Ku Klux Klan members and encourages support for a federal investigation into the case. The flyer, apparently printed and distributed by the Greensboro Justice Fund in the summer of 1981, also includes suggestions and contact information for citizens, who are encouraged to become involved. |
