CALL FOR A SPECIAL PROSECUTOR EUR THE GRAND JURY INVESTIGATING £' 7V2 fJ THE GREENSBORO KILLINGS We as concerned citizens wish to call upon the United States Attorney General and the federal courts to appoint a Special Prosecutor to conduct the federal Grand Jury now investigating the November 3rd, 1979, killings of James Waller, Michael Nathan, Sandra Smith, Cesar Cauce, and William Sampson, and the terrorizing of the Greensboro community. The position of the Justice Department now leading the Grand Jury is one of gross conflict of interest. The Justice Department is in the untenable role of prosecuting itself. It defends in the Greensboro Civil Rights Suit those federal agents it should be investigating in the Grand Jury. It uses as its Grand Jury field investigators North Carolina FBI agents whose own conduct in the matter has been called into question. Further, it has already officially exonerated the Greensboro Police, that, evidence has shown, are implicated in the violence. Clearly, there is need for an individual outside the government to pursue any investigation that can be deemed thorough and credible. These killings and the freeing of the perpetrators have left a deep wound of hatred and distrust that will not be healed until justice is done. We demand a Special Prosecutor as the only conceivable means of directing the Grand Jury in the pursuit of that end.
