Page 6 WORKERS VIEWPOINT, May 19,1980 JUSTICE POLICE, EGGS ON ATTACK OF CWP IN the last issue of Workers Viewpoint, May 12, 1980, we said that "The Justice Department on May 1 came out with a report finding the Greensboro 3 innocent of any wrong-doing on Nov. 3." This was a gross misinformation. It should have read "The Justice Department on May 1 came out with a re port finding the Greensboro police innocent of any wrong-doing on Nov. 3." It had stated in the report that "... we wish to advise you that, after careful review of the reports, we have concluded that there is no basis for liability under the federal criminal civil rights statutes on the part of any member of the Greensboro Police Department." This is straight-up letting the Greensboro police off the hook and denying any government complicity in the planned assassination of the Communist Workers Party 5 on Nov. 3. The state/FBI and District Attorney Schlosser have been working overtime to try to cover up their cold-blooded murder of the CWP 5 and now, as soon as the report came out publicly, Schlosser jumped at the chance. After coming out of closed doors with a grand jury, Schlosser indicted three more anti-Klan fighters and friends of the CWP. The fight now, instead of being just the Greensboro 3, has been turned into the fight for the Greensboro 6. Schlosser took this arrogant action only because he knew he had the full backing of the state. But the CWP and friends will continue to surge forward with the struggle, to serve notice to the ruling class like we did in Washington, D.C, spraypainting the outside of the Attorney General's office, dogging the campaign trail of presidential candidates and to prepare for the dictatorship of the proletariat in this decade. We will make the U.S. ruling class think twice, three times before they dare to try to attack or harass the CWP arid our friends again. □ Serve Notice to Chief Spy Civiletti! Justice Department defaced A slogan, allegedly spray-painted by members of the Communist Workers Party, defaces the wall of the Justice Department, under the portrait of Edward Levy, attorney general under President Ford. The slogan was in protest of the department's handling of the Nov. 3 Greensboro clash between the CWP and members of the Ku Klux Klan and Nazi party, which left five dead. PREPARE FOR THE DICTATORSHIP OF THE PROLETARIAT IN THE 80* ■:,: Part] "It is not just an attack on the Communist Workers Party. It's an attack on all. It is just the first shot. Avenge the murder of the CWP 5 and free the Greensboro 6 will be the clarion call to kick off the class struggle of the 80's." says Comrade Jerry Tung, General Secretary of the Communist Workers Party. That call was echoed on May 3 both in Greensboro and Washington D.C. when over 100 demonstrators rallied simultaneously despite the bourgeoisie's attempt to scare people off by talking on the press and radio about-the possibility of violence. Two days ago, on May 1, the Communist Workers Party penetrated the security of the Justice Department, and served notice to head spy Civilleti by spraypainting the outside wall of his office "Avenge {he Murder of the CWP 5". This chief spy was so scared that he didn't even dare to call his own goons on us for fear of revealing his dirty attack on the CWP. After that was Carter's D.C. election office. It was there that the CWP also had spraypainted the doors. But Carter's campaign workers quickly covered it up, fearing that the sign might stir up the anger of the masses against these dirty politicians and bourgeois representatives. This fear of the CWP was not just the exclusive domain of the Democrats. The Republicans also shook at the mention of the CWP. Earlier, the GOP had planned a convention on May 3 right near the CWP rally in Greensboro. But they didn't want to be put on notice. Instead of facing the anger of the people, being exposed on their lies they've been feeding us, they hightailed out and moved their convention to another area. In fact, so scared were the bourgeoisie that they turned the Greensboro rally into an armed camp by ringing the 100 demonstrators with dozens of uniformed and plainclothes cops, and stationed sharpshooters on rooftops while the demonstrators were protected by the CWP security system. So intense was the situation that even the Greensboro Daily News/Recordhad to admit, "Dozens 6f police, concerned that the indictment of the six CWP members Friday on felony charges would exacerbate tension, blocked off Green Street from Market to Washington and kept watch. Sharpshooters armed with binoculars and rifles were stationed atop adjacent buildings." "Government Plaza {was) under the intense scrutiny of at least two security systems—the Greensboro Police Department and the CWP." CWP was prepared for another Kokomo where the Party led a deliberate organized defense against the possible attack of the cops and state troopers, and the cops in Greensboro here knew that. That's why they didn't dare to mess with us. The U.S. ruling class thought that they could crush our spirit by attacking us harder, first by killing our five comrades, then indict three more innocent Party supporters along with the previous Greensboro 3. But the harder they hit, the harder we'll hit them back, with all the more people rallied to our side. Memories of who and what the CWP 5 fought and died for run deep. "Jim Waller was our national president. We're here to revenge the murder of the CWP 5 and support the Greensboro 6.>' cried Leon Johnson of the North Carolina Trade Union Educational League. "Even though out politics are not your politics, I believe that your fight is our fight. This government seems to love the scum of the earth.

Biographical/historical note |
The Communist Workers Party (CWP) was a Maoist group in the United States. It was founded in 1969 as the Workers' Viewpoint Organization. The party is mainly remembered for the "Greensboro Massacre", a November 3, 1979 Death to the Klan march that left five of the CWP protesters dead. The CWP emphasized unionization and self-determination for African-Americans and enjoyed some success in textile cities of North Carolina. The party established branches in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, Greensboro, West Virginia, Colorado and other locations. Prior to its reorganization as a political party, the group had been known as the Workers Viewpoint Organization. Under this umbrella, it directed groups as the Revolutionary Youth League, the African Liberation Support Committee, and the Trade Union Education League. Confrontations with the Klan were particularly acute in Greensboro, where the Klan attempted to disrupt the work of the CWP and vice versa. In July, 1979, the Klan held a rally and viewing of The Birth of a Nation in China Grove, N.C., which was disrupted by CWP members who burned a Confederate flag and taunted members of the KKK. There were also challenges in the press. These provocations were a precursor to the November 3, 1979. "Death to the Klan!" rally organized by the CWP. Members of the Klan were armed, as were some members of the CWP. Two members of the CWP and three rally participants were killed in the assault by the KKK. This was the incident that became known as the "Greensboro Massacre". In response to the acquittal of the accused killers, the CWP attempted to storm the 1980 Democratic National Convention and succeeded in setting off firecrackers in Madison Square Garden. Subsequent to the Greensboro massacre, the group moved towards a social democratic formation that would work for peaceful transition to socialism; it dissolved the Communist Workers Party and formed the New Democratic Movement in 1985. The New Democratic Movement lasted but a few years. The Greensboro Justice Fund is a still extant remnant of this movement. |
