The Faculty Ad Hoc
Committee found that the
Senate denied NBS fair hearing
and due process because new
evidence was introduced during'
the executive session that
influenced the final decision -of .
Senate. Furthermore, NBS was
not give the opportunity jto
refutp this evidence, which the "
Dean Jim Allen was present to
answer any questions -following
the reading of the letter. He
__rerexplained-Some:of the points
of the Chancellor's letter and
stressed the fact that the "action
taken by Senate was invalid"
because the , body failed _ to
provide, a fair hearing-and due
process.
Questions were raised as to
the. qualifications of the
members of the Faculty

proceedural problems. Dean
Alien answered this by saying

| Description | This article, published in the April 12, 1973, edition of The Carolinian, the student newspaper of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), reports that the Student Government Association (SGA) had requested a further explanation from Chancellor James Sharbrough Ferguson about his decision to override SGA's vote to revoke the recognition of the Neo Black Society. SGA contended that the chancellor did not have the authority to make this decision, to which the chancellor responded that SGA's investigation violated due process. On March 26, 1973, the UNCG Student Government Association (SGA) had voted to reclassify (remove funding and recognition from) the Neo Black Society, stating that the organization was discriminatory and possibly was in violation of an SGA prohibition against affiliations with political or religious organizations. The SGA decision was overturned by university administration on the basis of faulty evidence and improper procedure by SGA, resulting in an eventual legal filing by SGA members. At the beginning of the 1973-74 school year, the Neo Black Society was reinstated by SGA as a recognized and funded student organization after revising its constitution to reflect that membership was open to all students without regard to race. |
