Conference with Mr. ilugene Street
(March la, 1963)
With the Dean of Students and the President of Student Government
present, Chancellor Singletary made to Mr. Street, operator of the Cinema
Theatre and the Town and College Restaurant, the same statement that he
had made to Mr. Apple on the previous day.
Mr. Street stated that he had already been approached on several
occasions by both students and faculty members interested in having
establishments at the Corner desegregated. His remarks on the subject
may be summarized as follows:
If it were possible to limit desegregation to Negro students at
the College, he would accept the Chancellor's proposal. He is certain,
however, that these students would want to bring their friends and families
to the theatre and to the restaurant. They would be followed by Negro
students from local colleges and by other members of the Negro community.
He would then lose most of his white patrons.
He does not depend upon the College community to support -either the
theatre or the restaurant. A student boycott would not, therefore, pose
a threat to his operations,
A picket line would not effectively block the Cinema box office; being
15 feet from the sidewalk, It is on private property.
