Nhereas, we, as faculty members at The Woman's College of the
University of North Carolina, share in the privileges and
responsibilities of meeting the educational needs of North Carolina;
and, whereas, we believe that students should be admitted to
the University solely on the basis of educational qualifications and
that qualified students of any race can be incorporated satisfactorily
into the University;
and, whereas, we concur in the actions of the Federal Courts in
eliminating racial discrimination in the admission of students to
the undergraduate and graduate schools of the University of North
Carolina;
and, whereas, we are confident that the University will continue
in its tradition of giving educational leadership to the state in
showing that the problems associated with desegregation can be met
intelligently and with good feeling;
Therefore, Be it Resolved, That we commend the University
Administration for those positive steps taken in good faith by
which the admission directives of the Federal Courts have been applied;
That we pledge our full support and cooperation in the
educational implementation of the new policy to the end that the
University of North Carolina may better serve all the people of
North Carolina; and
Be it Further Resolved, That copies of this resolution be sent
to the Chairman and Secretary of the Board of Trustees for transmission
to the Board and to the Acting President for transmission to the
appropriate administrative officers of the University,
Presented to members of the faculty at regular meeting, October 18, 1955
by Dr. Warren Ashby.
