Spaghetti, not ticker tape /
For two weeks of plenty and plush in Atlantic City's Hotel Traymor
UNRRA delegates bemoaned the world food crisis. Famine threatened one
fourth of the world's population, 500 million
people where are U.S* food deliveries?
Fiorello LaGuardia, new UNRRA head, struck out
at inaction: "I want plows, not typewriters...
ticker tape ain't spaghetti.,,1 want fast-mov-
ing ships..." What has happened to the proposed 25% cut in U.S. grain consumption? Even
gaunt Britain has promised to match our bread
supplies in a rationing program, if only we
would send bread to Europe I
One of the major problems faced by LaGuardia is UNRRA's
United authority. For example, if Poland needs food,
this is the proceedure: 1)Poland must authorize UNHRA to take the orobler
£)Poland must provide detailed statistics, 3)UNRRA must check these statistics and then nag the U. S. for food supplies, ships, etc. 4)Mean-
while, Hoover checks up for Truman, comnittees check up on Hoover, and
the world starves. 5)To make things more complicated, displaced aersons
are not included in UNRRA authority...The Committee on Refugees and DP's
takes care of that for the UN...Too many cooks...
Repeat Performance?
It is estimated that Spain is now an armed camp of about 100,000
German refugees, including 6,000 scientists, 3,000'espionage agents,
along with some $200 million in German holdings. It is also reported
that a German atomic power project is in progress.
Fiffht on Rail Trust
A Dept. of Justice attorney has warned the Fenate Interstate Commerce Committee that the Bulwinkle Bill, exempting railroad monopolies
from Supreme Court action, would create a gigantic monopoly so dangerous that socialization of the railroads would be necessary. Meanwhile,
Wallace declares that if the bill goes through the Senate, Truman will
probably use the veto.
Housing: a No. 1 Problem
Three million new homes are desperately needed, largely as a result
of the war. This problem hits the vets hardest. Will the proposed Wyatt
housing program do the job? Will the six hundred million dollar subsidies to the building materials industry relieve the dismal shortage of
supplies? Will the building trade unions, traditionally jealous of competition, admit the one and a half million new workers needed? Can the
prefabricated housing industry expand from a hundred million to two and
a half billion dollars a year? even with government help? Let's hope so!
Almost 52% of the people of the U.S. need new homes...
"A poll of veterans on the housing question shows them distinctly
in favor of govt, aid Hfor the building program. Many congressmen had
wrongly supposed that ex-service men were hopelessly addicted to foxholes..." The New Yorker, March 30, 1946.
