It can't happen here?
Columbia, Tenn., Monday, Feb. 25: A scuffle occurred between
a negro veteran and a white man over an insult to the veterans
mother. Both mother and son were cruelly beaten by bystanders and
then arrested. Later an armed mob of 50 to 75 whites stormed the
jail on a lynching party. Only two of this mob were arrested and
then released after paying a small fine.
That night armed white men roamed the streets, shooting into
the darkened negro district. Terrified inhabitants hid in their
homes. Pom: patrolmen venturing into the district were shot upon
by a panicky Negro.
The next morning there were indiscriminate arrests of some
100 Negroes, accompanied by brutal maltreatment and vandalism. The
prisoners were held without bail or counsel, and an attorney employed to represent them by the Nat'l Ass'n for the Advancement of
Colored People was denied an interview with the prisoners and was
not allowed to be present when they were questioned.
Thursday, Feb. 28, while being questioned, three of the prisoners were shot without legitimate reason. Two of them were killed,
"No person shall be derived of life, liberty, or property

"WHEN...you have succeeded in dehumanizing the Negro; when you've
put him down and made it impossible for him to be but as the beast of
the field; when you have extinguished his soul in the world and placed
him where the say of hope has blown out as in the darkness of the damned, are you quite sure that the demon you have aroused will not turn
and rend you?....Destroy this spirit (liberty) and you have planted the
seeds of despotism at your own doors. Familiarize yourself with the
chains of bondage and you prepare your own limbs to wear them. Accustomed to trample on the rights of others you have lost the genius of
your own independence and become a fit subject of the first cunning tyrant who rises among you."
Abraham Lincoln
