The student senate at the Uni- |
versity cf North Carolina
I Greensboro debated early into I
I the morning today over whether I
ot to continue student finan- I
II cial support of the Neo-Black I
I Society (NBS), a campus organ-
on composed of black stu- |
Debate c;
I hour hearing during which t
I NBS was charged with discrimi- I
I nation against white students by I
I denying them membership in I
I the society.
A spokesman for the NBS de- I
I nied the accusations, saying the I
I society was open to any student I
I who wanted to join.
The NBS spokesman, Le
I Chestnut, said that the discrimi- |
I nation charges were based
I assumptions because white s
dents had not attempted to join. I
The charges against the NBS I
were made by Mark Carpenter, I
a UNC-G student, who said the I
society actively recruited blacks I
and discouraged whites from f
joining, and that the NBS c
tution and activities were o
ed toward blacks.
Carpenter said also that the |
NBS had made one white st
dent unwelcome when she i
tempted to join.
Chestnut and other NBS mei
bers denied they had made the I
white student unwelcome and I
further denied statements - attributed to them by the student.
Chestnut, also denying that the I
NBS recruits blacks, repeatedly
told the student senate:
"We do not practice discrimination. We have not denied anybody participation. Anyone who |
wants to can join this society."
As for activities, Chestnut |
said:
"The purpose of the Neo-Black I
Society is to make the u
sity and the c
shout'.n't activifie;
toward Hades."
The debate was
session of the student i
after all who had attentfsd the I
hearing were removed from Cone ]
Ballroom in Elliott Hall c
campus.
