Dear Dean Allen:
Thank you very much for your detailed letter of June 6,
1973, in reference to proposed changes in the constitution
of the Neo-Black Society. As you know, my clients consider
the statement by the Society that it is open to members of
all races and welcomes members of all races a crucial positive
change. Since I talked to you I have had an opportunity to
talk once again with my clients and they have no objection to
this change applying to all student organizations. However,
they do feel that at sometime a statement of this policy should
be made by the Neo-Black Society.
As I interpret the decision of the Board of Trustees, the
Board has concluded that there is sufficient evidence to allow,
although not to compel, the Student Senate to withdraw Type II
classification from the Neo-Black Society on the basis that the
Society is a discriminating organization. As you know the Board
sent the matter back for rehearing in the Student Senate because
of procedural defects.
I am sure that it would be better for all concerned if the
Society can dispel the impression that it discriminates before
the hearing before the Student Senate is required.
I am a little disturbed by what seems to me to be the
ambiguity of your letter of June 6, 1973 on the critical point
that the Neo-Black Society will state that it is open to members
of all races and welcomes members of all races into membership.
I hope that all of these questions can be settled promptly
and to the satisfaction of all those concerned. Thank you again
for your letter.
Sincerely yours,
Michael K.
