Miss Cheryl Sosnik
Vice President
Student Government Association
The Campus
Dear Miss Sosnik:
I am responding to your letter of April 11, 1973, in which you
reported that the Student Senate on April 10 adopted a resolution requesting certain information from the Ad Hoc Faculty Committee
that advised me concerning the Senate's reclassification of the
Neo-Black Society.
One request was that "the Ad Hoc committee. . . issue to the
Student Senate an explanation of what evidence they found to be new
evidence that was presented in the executive session of the Student
Senate meeting of March 26-27, 1973, and also why they found that
new evidence to be of 'questionable validity. '"
I must confess that such action on the part of the Senate is
surprising to me. It was specifically at the request of Senate spokesmen that an arrangement was made so that the tapes of the executive
session of March 26-27 might be heard by the Faculty Committee.
I personally was told by a Student Senator making such a request that
"the Senate acted on the basis of evidence that was presented only in
the executive session, so we want the Faculty Committee to hear the
tapes. " Miss Jacqueline Coleman, then the Vice President of Student
Government, endorsed this request and was herself present while
these confidential tapes were played for the Committee.
Following receipt of your letter of April 11, 1973, I received a
communication from Miss Jacqueline Coleman indicating her intention
to appeal the Chancellor's action of March 31, 1973, presumably to the
Board of Trustees. The Board is, of course, an appropriate appeal
agency. Therefore, if there are questions concerning new evidence
that was presented in the executive session, they can be dealt with
properly through the appeal. No doubt the entire procedure would be
reviewed by the Board in such event. ft
Please let me know if you wish information concerning procedure.
A
Sincerely,
James S. Ferg
Chancellor
