Amazon Cotton Mills Company
Thomasville, North Carolina
Dear Mr. Fesperman:
I hope you will excuse my delay in answering your letter of
March 28, 1969. The events of last week preempted my time to such an
extent that I could not write before now.
No doubt you know by now that Slater Corporation did maintain
its food service throughout the strike. Many students continued to take
their meals in the Dining Hall despite the inconvenience and occasional
unpleasantness that were associated with their doing so.
The Student Legislature did vote to support the strike and the
boycott. They did not use any money that came from Student Activity fees
to meet the expenses. The Student Finance Board, which has authority
over this money, did not vote to authorize such use.
It is true that we had some outside influences at work on the
campus. However, the great majority of our students seemed to resent
this fact, and they failed to support the outsiders in their efforts to produce
confrontations.
The strike was settled Wednesday evening, April 2. We expect
service to be normal again when classes resume April 10.
I appreciate your writing. We look forward to having Jeanne
back with us.
Sincerely,
James S. Ferguson
Chancellor
