Klan
On November 1?, 1979t Tom Clark, one of our most respected fighters, was suspended from work. His "crime" was to have been charged
with possessing a weapon. He was arrested for this one week after
being wounded by the KKK/Nazis in an ambush that killed 5 other
class fighters. Yet look at who else has been arrested, Dr. John
Gore, former staff doctor and current Durham County Medical Examiner
was convicted of assault by pointing a gun. Nathaniel Harrison, one
of the hospital's own administrators, has repeatedly been convicted
of driving while intoxicated, a crime that kills 25,000 people a year
in this country. Roger Flambeau, the department head of Materials
Distribution, has also had repeated convictions on driving charges.
But who do they suspend? Not their own administrators, department
heads and doctors who are clearly criminals; but Tom, who is trying
to organize for workers justice. Howerton, Dugan and the rest
of the administration is showing how they are just extensions of
the police, the Klan and the Nazis. The three piece suits they wear
each day might as well be hooded sheets for how they act towards workers.
WORKER'S OPPRESSION—AN OLD STORY
But suspensions, firings, racism and workers oppression are nothing
new to DCHC. Almost anyone who has worked here knows the score on that.
Just in recent months the hospital has:
—refused to publicly investigate a tuberculosis hazard in the laundry.
—cut-back, sped-up and harrassed the housekeeping department.
—been confronted with numerous lawsuits for racial discrimination,
coming from Afro-Americans at all levels, workers, department
heads and administration.
—Imposed a wage freeze on all workers.
—Fired Ben Walton, long known for standing by workers grievances.
—Cracked down on workers leave time through the "PT0" plan.
And now in a deepening economic crisis, we can be sure that these
kinds of attacks will get worse. Gas prices, inflation, high rents,
high food prices, are problems we all face. And we can be sure that
the hospital administration, like bosses everywhere, will keep trying
to shove their economic burdens onto our backs. They can,'t afford fo
have workers organizing to protect their own standard of living.
They are forced to step up their repression to try and scare workers
into staying passive: "Yessir Mr. Howerton. Nossir Mr. Dugan- Anything
you say sir." That's what they are after.
So they pull out the KKK to terrorize blacks and anyone else
who fights for justice, look at who they killed in Greensboro. Cesar
Cauce was a deeply loved and respected leader of the workers movement
at Duke. He was the husband of Floris Cauce, one of the leaders of
the DCHC Workers Association which he played an active part in organizing. Mike Nathan was a communist doctor who was widely known for his
deep concern for his patients and his political support for poor and
working class people, Bill Sampsan, Sandy Smith and Jim Waller were
all leaders of the workers movements at Cone Mills. Now Bill's and Jim's
widows have been fired from their jobs. DCHC is trying to fire Tom, and
who knows what they will try with Floris, who has just returned to work.
The message is clear: DCHC does the work of the Klan even without
the hoods and sheets. The Klan supports the company and the company
supports the Klan. With the police helping both out all the way. The
only force that can defeat these criminals is the organized_strength
of all workers. We call on all justice loving people to join us in
this fight.
