Item description
The 1970 Guilford College yearbook, The Quaker, highlights the achievements of African American students, as well as the increasing presence of African American staff and faculty. This was the first year that black players were pictured with the football team, as well as the first time there was a black female student, Faye Scales, on Homecoming court. Also pictured are the four black students on the men's basketball team: Luther Weathers (#52), M.L. Carr (#30/31), Teddy East (#14) and Jerry Crocker (#12). This year marked the return of James McMillian as an instructor in the Fine Arts Department. Also notable is the inclusion of a photograph of white cafeteria manager Tony Lioce with two unnamed African American cafeteria workers.
