Biographical/historical note
S. Edward “Eddie” Hirabayashi, a Japanese-American, was born in King County, Washington, in 1923. His family was interned during World War II, and his brother Gordon protested, resulting in his imprisonment. Hirabayashi attended Guilford College on a scholarship and graduated in 1947. He was highly involved in campus activities and organizations, and was an all-conference basketball player. He later received a master’s degree in philosophy and religion at the Benares Hindu University, in India, and attended Columbia University for advanced study. He taught Philosophy of Religion at Columbia University and the State University of New York in New Paltz before joining the Foreign Service. He served with A.I.D. in South America, Africa, and the Middle East as well as Washington D.C.,a nd retired in 1987.

Description
This philosophy thesis, written in 1947 by Japanese-American Guilford College student S. Edward Hirabayashi examined the exodus and internment of Japanese-Americans. The thesis includes quotes from those affected by these policies and is therefore useful in gaining a better understanding of how internment impacted the civil rights of individuals. The work also includes background regarding these policies and the impact life in American has had on Japanese immigrants.
