Charges of "overt racial discrimination" have been filed
against nearby Longview Golf
Club by several Guilford College
Staff members. Complaints have
been filed with the Guilford
County Community Relations
Department, The North Carolina
Human Relations Commission,
The United States Civil Rights
Commission, and the Civil
Rights Division of the U. S.
Department of Justice.
The charges stem from an
August 7 incident involving
three staff members, Dick Woodward, Director of Counseling
and Placement, Ron Cruick-
shank, Head Resident of 1968
Dorm, and Ken Schwab, Director of Housing. Also with the
three at the time of the incident
was Roger Borden, a professor at
UNC-G.
The foursome had made reservations for tee-off time at the
Longview course several days in
advance. Upon arriving at the
desk to pay their greens fees, the
group was told by course owner

This October 1, 1971 article published in the Guilford College student newspaper, The Guilfordian, reports on the racial discrimination of college staff, Dick Woodward, by the local Longview Golf Club. Woodward, who served as the college's Director of Counseling and Placement and who is African American, showed up to play golf with three other Guilford staff and faculty and was not allowed to play because of his race.
