I Happy Thanksgiving' / • • aro 1n1an The student newspaper of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Established 1919 · Vol. XCI No. 13 www.carolinianonline.com November 23'-. November 29, 201. 0 _-. Wren~s Alice puts modern spin on a classic tale Michael Hamm~rsly StaffWriter Jim Wren's adaptation of Alice in Wonderland rendered a new breed of theatre based on the classic books 1hrough The Looking Glass and Alice's Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis. CaJroll. So what did audien~es have to e:Xpect of Wren's urban techno adaptation of the play? There .is an immense amount of groundbreaking creativity fit into a small sixty ffiinute time frame. "Alice" is a program that must be viewed multiple times in order ~o catch all · that Wren lias done. Maiya Reaves perlQrm~ the modern form of Alice, the character to which the. play centers it§elf. Instead.of sitting on a riverbank with her sister · and stumbling ·upon bottles labeled "Drink Me" an~ cake labeled "Eat Me;' Alice finds herself asleep at her desk while attempting to complete her suinmer teading. Wren ·consistently incorporates lines and ideas from the original 'l\lice" while ·still · .q}aintaining modern originality. · Alice complains about the book she has to rea:d and states out loud, "What· is the use of a book, without pictures or conversations:' Alic~ then starts a webcam conversation with her sister and is interrupted by pop-ups of the "White Rabbit" character. After three or four Jnterruptions, the conv.er~ sation comes to a ,close and the screen is left by a message stating, "Click Me:' Ali~e "clicks" the message ·and the adventure begin,s. She is -taken to a world where - the. Mad Hatter is a DJ played by ·Ramon Perez, Tweedledum and Tweedledee are rival dance 'cre~s and the body of the Caterpillar, played by Chris Mayo,_ is made up of glow-in-the-dark expandable balls. Wr~n really broke the mold . and made a spectacle a.ccessible to both children arid adults with this modern take on Alice in Wonderland, complete with $ilk climbers, fire-eaters, strobe lights, dribstep and techno. ._ When asked what Lewis Carroll would have said of his adaptation, Wren laughed and said, " I think Carroll would say 'I don't recognize this,' but with the. technol- ..
