Katie Marshall chats with UNCG students about the upcoming school year by the fountain Sunday evening. James Nichols With the school year beginning and campus quickly coming back to life, UNCG President Katie Marshall is reaching out to be a visible presence on campus. In a time when univer$ities are facing budget cuts and students higher tuition rates; "KMarsh" Marshall plans · t~ bring the UNCG community together in a completely different way than before. Marshall's main goal for this year is to enhance the "student experience" at UNCG. "The students will be at the heart of everything that I do as president:' explains Marshall. "I will begin with issues that I have heard repeated since my freshmen year here:' These include the lack of SEE SGA PRESIDENT, PAGE 2 Construction of new education building continues Matthew Howard Editor-In-Chief As students begin to stroll up and down Spring Garden St. and fill in classrooms, it will be inevitable that they will see the construction 6f the new education building in front of the Bryan School of Business and Economics and the new "Tower Village 2" directly across the street. UNCG has become fond of construction on its campus. In the past year there has been a reconstruction of the walkway beside Jackson Library connecting College Avenue to the Rock. The Forney building has also seen a complete overhaul to house IT services. A new baseball training facility is also near completion in conjunqion with UNCG Baseball Stadium . . SGA President Katie Marshall commented on the recent campus construction. "I know we only have so much land to work with on campus. I also believe in the people making the decisions to build have the students interest at heart. That I support:' . The new education building will be the very first building on campus with LEED certification. According to the U.S. Green Building Council website, "LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions:' The building is currently SEE CONSTRUCTION, PAGE 2 Fall Kickoff connects students to campus life · Sara O'Brien Staff Writer As students settled back into the dorms and classes began, UNCG celebrated the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year with its 25th annual Fall Kickoff. The festivities happened along College Ave in the center of campus from 11am to 3pm on Monday, August 20. Approximately 100 different organizations comprised of various student-led groups, campus services, and area businesses were represented. Students, new and old, perused tables for information pertinent to their academic and social lives and gathered fun freebies along the way. Entertainment was provided as well, including live SEE WELCOME WEEK, PAGE 4 The Rock will display Welcome Week events. MATIHEW HOWARD/EDITOR·IN·CHIEF
