UNCG alum wins Tony for Best
Performance by a Featured Actress

Beth Leavel, who received her MFA in Acting from UNCG in 1980, took home a coveted
Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical Sunday night.
Leavel was awarded the Tony for her performance in the title role of "The Drowsy
Chaperone," a hit musical comedy about a Broadway actress named Beatrice
Stockwell. Containing a play within a play, "Chaperone" takes a satirical look at 1920s
theatre through the eyes of a theatre fan, Man in Chair. 'The Drowsy Chaperone"
enjoyed a total of 13 Tony nominations.
Leavers role in "Chaperone" has also earned her a Drama Desk Award, an Outer Critics
Circle Award and an L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award. Her other Broadway roles have
included Dorothy Brock in a revival of "42nd Street" and Tess in "Crazy for You." She
has also appeared on such TV shows as "Ryan's Hope" and "Law & Order: Criminal
Intent." She is remembered at UNCG for her role in the 1978 production of "Hello,
Dolly!"
